Below is the contents of my xdm.log. I notice there are some missing
directories. Is this my problem, and if so, what is the best way of
regenerating them?
XFree86 Version 4.3.0
Release Date: 27 February 2003
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.20 i6
Sorry I removed the previous history. The problem is kde doesn't start after
login.
Another clue, it doesn't matter which session I select, I get a twm? session.

Logging in to user account in console mode and typing startx starts kde

Logging into root in console and typing xdm gives a non kdm login screen, and
logging in to the user account starts kde.
Is there a good place I can put some debug statements to see what is
happening?

It was kde. changing to kde-3.1 made no difference.
I'm leaving the net for a few days, but will check into this when I get back.
I'll rebuild kde if no

Tried it, didn't help. Let's not give up. It's a pain to keep typing startkde
when I know I shouldn't have to.

Somehow something got broken.
kdm seems to run ok, but all selections for the session selection result in a
single console window at login. Typing startkde in the window starts kde,
after which kde appears as before, except for the extra console window.
