You might hve compiled mplayer with the +arts USE flag.
After I added -arts to my use flags, emerge -vauD --newuse world
recompiled
I recently removed arts and then found that mplayer no longer worked
though I am a gnome user.
Prehaps another package could have replaced arts?
My own fault for not checking but a worthy point if you do want to use
mplayer but dont think you need a kde app on a non kde system ;)

I have to wonder if nobody else noticed the fact that this is an
update to an already-installed instance of arts?
Uninstall arts ('emerge unmerge arts'), add '-arts' to your USE flags,
and run 'emerge --newuse world' since arts is us

Without KDE, nothing; yes. Putting -arts in your /etc/make.conf should
solve the immediate issue of libao dragging it in as a depe

I don't need kde, so I never emerged kde. However, portage tries to
emerge kde-base/arts when I emerge world :
$ emerge -pvtuD world
These are the packages that I would merge, in reverse order:

Hi everyone!
I am having an issue when i emerge kde.
It compiles the first file successfully, and while in the process of
merging the file, I get this:
>>>
/usr/share/man/man3/DES_pcbc_encrypt.3.gz -> des.3.gz
>>> /usr/share/man/man3/EVP_SignUpdate.3.gz ->
EVP_SignInit.3.gz
>>> /usr/share/man/
I'm not sure if this would help, but it is --usepkg or -k but not
-usepkg, two dashes.

Hello!
When I emerge KDE I use the following
#emerge –av –usepkg kde
-a =ask before emerging anything so that I can see which dependencies
I need.
-v = verbose….
--usepkg it looks for the files in the PKGDIR before wanting
to download.
I copied the files on the cd to a fo

*sigh* That isn't an adequate solution, it's just brushing the problem
under the carpet. The ebuild is broken, so pleas
Sorry Folks,
I should have searched the forums more thoroughly. I found the answer and
turned sandbox off.
Thanks,

Can anyone explain how to traceback and fix an "emerge kde" that exits with
an:
ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY
and points to a log file in /tmp that lists either a few files or
directories (in this case in the /etc tree?? I'd post the actual
files/directories but my test system is down at the moment.
I've just gotten the base system installed 2 days ago and have tried to
install KDE, but it fails in "kde_src_compile" line 123 with an exit error
telling me that it can't find freetype2 (sorry that I don't have the actual
output - have halted my laptop) in
