Try turning off the cache just to see if that affects the start time, --cache=no. This would only be an issue if the file loading is slow. Otherwise try running it with strace to see what's happening during the dead time. strace mpv

No. Starting mpv as root "fixes" the problem...so it is a permission problem (see my second mail). But mpv does not complain about missing permissions and plays the fileafter 5 seconds (when used as unpriveledged user). I am member of group "video" though and -- for example -- Blender gets fu
