Oh, one other oddity. The vmware modules vmmon and vmnet which should
be loaded by /etc/init.d/vmware in default mode, don't get loaded.

Make sure the kernel version in /usr/src/linux matches the version of
the kernel currently running.
What does the following command
qpkg -f /usr/kde/3.3/some-file
emerge -va prune the-package-found-if-it-is-part-of-kde
Thanks for this very useful hint! I have managed to free a lot
of precious disk space!!
I did it in a semi-automated way:
# emerge -p prune prune-list.txt
then I edited the file, leaving only the rows
Only problem: WinXP won't boot. The lines in grub.conf
Bug or feature? ;)

Starting skype without sound daemon
There are arts and esd USE flags for skype. Where do these sound

I am compiling it right now. Just a little question regarding aRTS. I compiled
into 3.4.0 but now I have decided to dump it. Could there be any problem
compiling with USE=-alsa for 3.4.1 (if there is, I would probably have to
recompile again, as I use that right now :) )?

It seems that all your requirements are met by a very smart backup

So you mean that whenever the hardware platform changes are
