Demos page and layer preview from the admin interface, but make layer
preview available upon login.
Also I would like to know if there is a way to request authentication for
certain maps from a user before previewing
The link you found is to the "old wiki" where GeoServer documentation used
to be maintained. For over a year the GeoServer documentation has been
maintained in the manual hosted at http://docs.geoserver.org/ and the old
wiki has been used a bit for development, but the documentation there has

Thanks so much for your help. The video was very helpful! I will try the
gdalwarp command that you recommended with the full set of .tif images and
see how that works.
I am curious as to why .png files are not recommended for GIS? The Layer
Preview OpenLayers calls return .png format

png is bad for serving, that is as an input format. Geotiff is much
more powerful.
As an output format for WMS is reasonably good, especially when there
is transparency in the mix.

Not sure I fully understand the concern. If you have a connection pool in
geoserver configured with a min of 35 and a max of 100, only more than 35
will be used if needed, and additional connections will be used on demand.
If your load goes up more connections will be used... and they do

It is indeed possible to use a view as long as it is registered in
geometry_columns. So the problem must lie elsewhere, possibly in the
view definition or something.
What is the error your receive on the console?

It could be the metastore hungry of RAM. But I can't tell for sure.
Try disabling the metastore adding the following to your web.xml:
GWC_METASTORE_DISABLED
true
And how much heap memory are you running geoserver with? (like in for the -Xmx
JVM parameter).

Thank you for your reply and it answers my question. I haven't looked into the
JNDI datastore option for postgis so far. Looks like that is something which
will do the trick for me. Meanwhile I am planning on running a crontab to
