Then I got my HTTP POSTs working again and proper exceptions from GeoServer
(and logs).

The error can be many things. If you are getting the OOM even with low
traffic

1) Check your -Xmx settings of the jave virtual machine and try to
increase the heap memory
2) What kind of image do you load ?. Seems to be a png. PNG images are
