Looking at the GEOT-3952 (Andrea's patch) I don't see or recall any
reason why that wasn't applied other than the ambition to replace the
whole thing at some stage. I can apply the patch to the current
development branch

Two existing jira issues mention the class VectorToRasterProcess fails if
the passed attribute is a Double: https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-3102
and https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-3952. I just ran into this
problem. Some older posts on the mailing list discussed fixing
