I've just started using geoserver and I have an application that will need
to get images from the server for reporting purposes. Being more explicit
the application will have to include an image from a specified lat and lon
as a part of the report data so my question is:

When you have that need it may be a "make or break"
deal, either the renderer allows you to get what you need

Don't worry, I'm following this discussion,
About wouter optimisation, I believe it's to specification to his
special need and style configuration.
Sorry to say that but I don't think his approch can be generalize
efficiently, the calculation cost will in most case
be far over the rendering
