BTW, hue values range from -180 through to 180 (inclusive) in GIMP.

I've had the same problem when I try and create or edit .tif files greater than
about 400mb. Because gimp keeps undo files etc, the amount of file size gets
near 1gb and that causes the same error messages as below.

Added bonus: you can run WrapMap to create the wrapped gradient in the
layer mask. And if you use the curves dialog/tool on the mask you can
change the linear gradient to something else and thus control finely how
the blur appears.
