It was probably not mentioned, but you should just create another layer for
the gradient background.

try:
import -window root root.`date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`.png
for the whole screen. Bind it to a key with your favourite
window manager or the xbindkeys utility.

The screenshot window lets you set a delay in seconds. You can
use that time to go back
