Hi all,
I have been troubleshooting PCMCIA/802.11b networking under SuSE 7.3
on a Mac PowerBook, and learning quite a bit, actually. I'm at the
last step of recompiling this feature into the kernel and have a

Of course. I just didn't know when I bought in to SuSE how different
their 'philosophy' was ;0)
They put together a fabulous package which almost installed itself.
But the pieces that fell throug
>SuSE places the ISOs online after the release has been out for a month.
I don't think this is true, anyway.
I have gone round with this as I was trying to find an iso for one of
their PPC distros a year ago. AFAIK the only iso's they provide are
for 'less supported' hardware like Sparc, Alpha
Ferenc, thanks for your reply. I will boot into Linux in a moment
and try your suggestions, but first a couple follow up questions:
>modprobe pcmcia_core, yenta_socket(s?), ds. Then your card's module.
I think when I try this the computer cannot find pcmcia_core. I'll
try it again, and for th
Okay, here comes round 1 questions. This is pretty basic and boring
stuff so if you don't feel inclined to respond, not to mention read
this stuff, then delete at will ;0)
I have listed below stuff I have found out, and *think* I know to be the case.
I'm reading about kernel building and modu
Speaking of vi...
Apologies if this has been run into the ground too many times
already, but a sysadmin friend sent the following link my way today:

Basically seems like an amusing introduction to the "cult of vi" for
the un-enlightened, like me
Thanks for the thought-filled and insightful replies!
Getting such detailed descriptions that go below the surface is just
the thing to speed my 'education.'
I found the Zip drive HOWTO at

It was in with the "mini" HOWTOs and that's why I miss
Hi again,
I'm fine tuning my fstab for devices and permissions that I want to
use, and I'm looking for clarification of a couple points that don't
seem to be detailed in the fstab or mount man pages nor in my unix
and linux books:
The vanilla SuSE 7.3 install on my Mac PowerBook (PPC) contains
Hi all,
Speaking of OpenOffice 1.0, I downloaded it (with wget which was unbelievably
fast considering the apparent traffic load) and noticed the LinuxIntel part
of the tar.gz filename. Does that really mean it is architecture-specific?
If this involves something like 'recompiling' to run prop
Hope I'm not getting on any nerves yet with my PATH questions, but anyway my
PATH as seen when logged in as root is --
/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin
seems like I can just leave that alone...
Another thing -- I'm getting double posts from a lot of people, including

After checking out the Fink project at sourceforge.net I decided to asked my
friend who wrote UltraScan for linux whether it might soon be possible to run
his software 'directly' under OSX. (He is planning to make a commercial
version for MacOSX users) He replied:

Well, the encouraging replies from Derek M., Dan C., and Benjamin S.
have turned my frown upside down! (thanks for tolerating my whiney
tone yesterday)
Simply put, my PATH is really hosed up! /sbin nowhere to be found. No
wonder I've been having so much trouble! But let me back up briefly

Okay, apologies in advance, but something I _just dont get_ is the
PATH variable.
(I'm a born and raised Macintosh user so please bear with me)
I bought a SAMS Teach Yourself book on Unix, but it says nothing
about WHY this PATH thing is even necessary. (Under MacOS... if I

Well, as another newbie I guess I'll chime in here with a few
lighthearted comments.
Bottom line -- its not easy being a newbie ;0)
Its fun to hear something of what's going on for the experts on this
list, but most of the time I don't understand what is being
discussed. That's okay, its stil
Well, since I can't buy more hours in a day to learn how to DIY my
own Linux updates, I think buying this brand new package from SuSE is
what I need to get things working quickly, and I can RTFM in my
'spare' time to figure out what I'm doing. I've been impressed with
their documentation and
Hi all,
I'm considering buying SuSE 7.3 for PPC, because it seems to be
better suited for out-of-the-box use of MacOnLinux (MOL), as well as
USB support, PC card slot configuration, and some other things I
haven't been able to get working yet. (Things that wouldn't be a
problem if I knew what
Thanks, everyone, for your input.
Derek mentions colors as well:
alias ls='ls -aF --color=tty'
If you don't like the default colors, you can set LS_COLORS with your
own settings. The easiest way to do that is with the dircolors(1)
command. Neat trick I learned from slackware. :)
Yeah, sinc
Hi folks,
On a related note, sort of, I discovered that under SuSE 7.1 for PPC,
that if I type ll
the output looks the same as if I had typed ls -l, but there is no
man page for 'el el'?
Is this common for different groups to add their own shorthands, and
then not include them in the manpages

Hi all,
As a new guy on the block, and a die hard Macintosh (now *improved*
with Linux!) user I'm curious that no one has commented about
QuickTime for live streaming. I suppose because its just another
proprietary format, but in that respect I would guess it should at
least be the equal of R
Hi all,
I'll try to Keep this Simple -- I do research at UVM, and I
discovered some extraordinary research software...that runs only
under Linux. First came that sinking feeling, but then I thought,
"maybe this Mac-user-for-life can do this?" With the help of several
otherwise very busy frie
