Intel 440GX Chipset? If so, it's a known problem with buggy bioses on these boards. The only known fixes/workarounds are to enable IO_APIC in the kernel, which should be enabled in the install kernel, or use the smp kernel. But, unfortunately, it's been reported that it doesn't always work.
