My solution was to flip gnome 3 the bird and switch to XFCE. I've been much happier since. It may be missing some of the graphical bells and whistles you get with gnome 2 plus compositing, but at least I have all of the functionality that I'm used to from gnome 2. - Chris On Wed, Jan 4, 201
