Woo hoo!!!  Thanx much.  That's all it was.  I didn't find alsamixer very intuitive to "turn on" the earphone output ( I was adjusting the volume but it remained "off" ) but it let me see immediately that was the issue.  I opened Kmix, clicked, closed and done.

Thanx for the suggestion to both of you.  It is ALSA.  I will try out alsamixer next time I am up in that environment.  I am not very familiar w/ ALSA ( it's always "just worked" for me in the past )  and didn't really know what tools exist to exercise the system more directly. -L
