I have nephew who is interested in attending Linux/Open Source
conventions, but not the ordinary business oriented ones.
He is looking for any that are organized more along the lines of a
Science Fiction con. (created by and put on by the fans themselves)
Anyone heard of such a thing?

First of all, I will echo Ben's suggestion not to miss an event just
because it is business oriented, particularly if the Trade show is
free, and even more so if it is local.
Secondly, you did not mention your nephew's age. Unfortunately some of
the commercial events (such as Linuxworld) exclude
