In the Header there should be an attribute VERSION:102 or something that's

Just for verificaiton - which ofx are we referring to? There are two
very different formats for this standard. One based on XML (newest
version) and one based on SGML(the one most banks seem to be supporting
now).

Personally, I would love to be able to just download QIF from Netbank
of Vanguard directly into GC. However I don't think I'll ever be able

Well, a "loan" to your friend is more like an asset than an expense.
Similarly, a loan that you receive (e.g. a mortgage) is a liability,
not an income :)
