haproxy with mongrels,
but have you considered moving your rails apps to Apache2 and Passenger
(available at http://www.modrails.com)? It will probably save you many
headaches compared running mongrel or thin.

for handling lots of connections. Also there seems to be no way
to reload stunnel configuration without killing the process which
would then drop current connections, but maybe I am missing something
here.

I tried to comment out the line above as instructed, but it made no
noticable change. As stated above, I will try to reproduce the problem
hen giving it some thought, I guess this is the
expected behaviour for what stunnel actually is supposed to do. So,
for now I'll stick with "option httpclose" for a while longer...
