Hi,
Looking at the ACER LCD's they come in glossy and matt finishes. I have
two lapops a IBM T42 with a matt screen and a Dell Inspiron 700m with a
glossy screen. I prefer the matt screen as you don't get any
reflections. So I am thinking of getting the matt LCD monitor. Are there
any benefits I
Colours are usually brighter with the glossy screens.
I tend to find the reflections on glossy screens more bearable. Instead of
all or most of the screen being un-readable, it's only the localized area
where the main reflection is.
Each to their own though :)

So it's just a matter of taste then, I think I will go with the matt
screen.
I was concerned one type might last longer or be more resiliant to
damge, but if that's not the case I'm fin with the matt ones.

Not that I've seen. I've seen about equal damage to both.

So why haven't manufactures switched to LEDs instead of
inverters/florescent, which only seem to last a few years at best...
Or doesn't that technology work for lappys?

There are laptops that are now just starting to come out with LED
backlights.
It's rumored that the new MacBook Pro will have it as well.

No rumor. The new Santa Rosa based MacBook Pros announced yesterday have LED
backlighting. Apple claim there is no difference in brightless or viewing
angle, but there is a 20% power saving.
Engadget has a comparison.

I removed the hidden partition on my son's Compaq laptop
without any ill effects. I do all partition work with BootIt NG.
It doesn't make sense to put BIOS code on the HD because
a PC needs to be able to start the boot process from the BIOS
even when the HD is defective, or in case you want to
'bout time.. With all the advances in LED's lately, all laptops should be
using them 10,000 hours of backlight life would be great. :)

Damn it
Installed the latest Vista nVidia driver day before yesterday, and now my
GPU fan runs full speed all the time even on the desktop, not just in
graphics or games like it's supposed to do.
Before the new driver, it ran slowly or not at all when on the desktop,
which is good.
that would be accurate, I hate shiny screens, and not crazy about even wide
screens, me a Dinosaur :-|

Well, re-installed Vista and XP. Newest nVidia drivers for each OS.
Still get the full speed fan in Vista with the nVidia drivers...
XP = silent fan
Vista = full speed noisy fan
Guess I need to wait for nVidia to address the issue. Per the forums I
was on it seems there are no fan speed
