ASKING THE REAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BIBLE
New book offers non-conventional answers to the obvious questions
people take for granted or fail to ask about the stories in the book of
Genesis
The lessons and meanings of the language of the Torah are often maddeningly
elusive. Everyone knows
Shalom my fellow colleagues,
I am wondering if any of you know of any comprehensive
books that compare the experiences of the Sephardic Jews who came
here to the United States in 1654 to how the Ashkenazi Jews came here
later during their first wave of immigration. I am already
Jewish Book World has said that it reviews between 600-700 books
anually, and more than 400 new titles are submitted each year as
candidates for the National Jewish Book Awards.
I, too, have been looking for statistics on Jewish book
publishing, and I think I've posted requests on hasafran.
Thanks to all who responded to my request. Mission accomplished (so
quickly much to the amazement of the person who requested the information)!

If you go to this Jewish Women's Archive web page,
http://jwa.org/teach/golearn/nov06/ , you will find our essay called,
Jewish diversity and innovation: The view from the kitchen. The essay
discusses how our traditional Jewish foods reflect the diversity and
travels of Jews.
I just received my copy of Library Journal and there is a two page
spread called Six New Book on the Struggle: Israel-Palestine by
Elizabeth Hayford, who reviews on this subject for the magazine. I
have not read the books and wonder if any of them are worth buying.
