I would like to add my two cents to this discussion, not as a school
librarian, but as a parent. The 3rd week in June has always been very
difficult for me to get to convention. It is always either: 1)my children's
last days of school (awards assemblies, graduations, etc..), or 2)the week
Hi,
I agree with Karen and thanks for bringing up the issue. Sitting on the
other side of the planet, I am in the same situation. Although I am not
working in a school, our community centre works closely with the school
schedule. The school is in session during the week of the convention,
Right, I'd like to echo Karen's concerns about timing and sensitivity to
school librarians. In addition, the AJL conference this year coincides
exactly with CAJE's day school educators' workshop at St. John's University
in Queens. We are a small world, and it would be good to coordinate.
To all --
As CoChair of AJL 05 I am sensitive to the issues involved. I don't know
the genesis of the decision to begin conventions on the third Sunday
(which is also Father's Day), but here are some pieces I've been told:
Holding it earlier would impact school teaching and the run-up
I personally find this discussion perplexing. For more than twenty years I
have missed almost every Fathers' Day with my family because it uncannily
coincided with AJL Convention.
When I asked (a number of years ago) why, davka, our Convention is held the
third weekend in June, I was told, In

minhag has been to have the meeting in mid to late June -- the ALA
convention. One primary goal is to NOT overlap with ALA, and so we look
at those dates first. To my knowledge, it was never to accommodate SSC
librarians, of
As a veteran AJL convention attendee with similar difficulties regarding
the dates, I know the subject has been addressed in the past, but
perhaps it needs to be looked at again, especially since there are many
more day schools both at the elementary and high school levels. I hope
it can be an
As Cheryl Banks notes, since we consider the timing of ALA Annual
Conference before selecting dates for AJL Annual Convention because many
AJL members also regularly attend the former, we haven't always held AJL
Annual on Father's Day, although it often is the case.
Since I'm not a day school
Just a couple of thoughts to add to my original post, which I sent to Noreen
Wachs at AJL. She forwarded it to the list, for which I am grateful - I
wasn't sure if it was a private complaint, or something better suited for
general discussion.
I do see that the 4th sunday-wed in June intereferes
