A required update for the Left 4 Dead Demo is now available. Please run
hldsupdatetool to receive the files. The specific changes include:
- Fixed problem where the group browser was showing servers for groups you were
not a member of
- Fixed problem with split packet/reassembly on level trans
The entire time I've had the servers through all the updates, the ping
in-game was never high when it was empty. I have a private server that is
empty quite a bit more than the public, and it has always had consistent
pings. If it didn't they I'd be concerned and would notice it, so would the

That's because people will look at the higher ping, which is a side effect
of the lower FSP, in their tools / server browser and complain about it
pinging higher than it should when empty. The fact the ping returns to
normal when they joy is of no consequence.

Nice job on getting the update out fast. This fixed all of the issues I
was previously having. All three of my servers are showing up in the
group selection screen and clients are having no trouble joining via
matchmaking.

Guys...when the server is empty it goes into hibernate mode, and sets itself
down to 10FPS ON PURPOSE. This is not a bug, it is a feature to try to save
CPU time when the server is idle.

Yes, this appears to be the case. While using direct connect from
console, you get thrown into a lobby but after when i connect to the
server again i just get dropped off with a message "you can only connect
to this server via lobby". If i use the lobby to connect to it with new
community syste

This latest update seems to cause a lot of problems for random players.
It takes forever to find a lobby or create one and lots of random
disconnects from Steam.
On server-side, i updated 1 of the servers and it seems to have fps
locked to 10 and no one can connect to it. It is stuck on a loop
I guess that was a pretty stupid question. Totally my bad.

sometimes have difficulty connecting. I get the same error about it being
reserved for lobbies only. I think what's doing it are the reservation
cookies. I can't seem to start up my server and connect to it before it's
fill
We are having a similar issue, although this seems to speak more towards
the overall design of the game.
One of my clan mates hosts the server at his home. I seem to be unable
to configure the server into allowing him to join.

One thing I wouldn't mind seeing is for it to cache the benchmark
results to a file that it reads from if it exists, rather than perform
the benchmark everytime the server starts up. With servers that are
multi-CPU/core, running this benchmark (which uses up 90+% CPU on a core
for a few second
