Look for a .steam folder, it may be hiding some info
that makes it update to beta. Delete it and try
downloading everything again.

Run the update tool with "-verify_all" on the command line. Also add an
explicit +ip parameter incase your system is misconfigured ("hostname -i"
should return your public IP address, not loopback).

Linux folks first depends on the usage output(at least I do so),
Fixed the seg vault on a Debian Sarge with kernel 2.6.11-1-686-smp
Ah, btw: I first tried to start the server as usual with "-autoupdate".
This didn't work and I had to update again with "-beta linux".
Perhabs you should have mentioned that.
