Very interesting. I'm checking out running srcds_l under esxi right now,
and aside from my rcon issue (I don't think it's a VM related problem
though), I'm noticing pings (as watched via hlsw) fluctuate from 8-32ms
constantly.

you should use a kernel level virtualizer (maybe like virtuozzo), not a
whole machine virtualizer.
