David,
You've already gotten some sage advice about your program notes for the
Strauss Andante, but here are a few more details you might include.
The exact date of the piece is unknown, but it was presumably written before
the silver wedding anniversary of Franz Joseph and Josephine (Josepha)

For anyone interested, I will be in residence at the Aspen Music Festival and
School from June 29th - July 27th. I will also be in residence at the
National Orchestral Institute and make my yearly visit to the Festival
Institute at Round Top in June. Hope to meet up with some horn list friends

I am a Elkhart Conn 8D "junkie" and have had an "N", 2 "E"s, a "C", an
"H", and now have an "M", an "L", and an "E" series!
Seems silly, but they are all different, the sought after ones are
usually the L's, M's and N's. I currently play on my "M" series which has

Of all the Elkhart Conn 8D's, is there a particular series which stands out as
being "better" or "worse" in quality or playing characteristics than
other "Elkhart" horns? Or does the apparent superiority of these horns
compared to the contemporary 8D's run across the board?
Thanks,

Interestingly enough, I also played several Beethoven's including the
3rd with Ted when I was in KC. At that time we didn't double any of the
horns. It could have been that particular orchestra however. Pete, say
hello to Sam Randall by the way.

I got an interesting piece of information from a co-player, who claims to have heard
it from Robert Schwendeman (sp?) - it seems, on the Szell/Cleveland recording of the
Beethoven 7, the high passages in the outer movements were played by 6 horns. I
wonder if Szell did the same thing with the E
