A screw driver with a stem a bit thicker than the axle going through the
springs, would be the right tool plus a good pair of flat nose pliers
(see Paul Navarros letter). Investment ? Nothing extra, as these tools

William,
The reason I mentioned using a valve lever for winding the springs is that
you then have a guide for where to bend the wire so the spring will fit on the
lever and you can use the bracket arm portion of the lever as your guide as to
the diameter of the windings.

Not exactly. All you need is enough tension to bring the valve back. You do
not need TOO MUCH tension, and that is what I have in my springs.
Too much tension is not a good thing.

But you'd still need spring wire. Normal wire wouldn't work. You'd also need
a proper gage since the thicker the wire the more tension you have.
As to the screwdriver to make springs I don't know if I'd go the cheap route.
A good spring winder is only 200 dollars, and with the proper spring

Perfection comes rather from the acquired technique than from tools.
That´s why apprenticeship is necessary to learn the trade.

Ask the nearest technique museum about their model makers. They might
have the technical apparatus plus the skill to copy most things. Or a
dental technician could do it also. He should have an automatic or semi
automatic lathe or CNC machine. It is just a matter of costs.
It can give you a tension headache. -AC.

Aha! So if you already have too much spring tension and you want faster
fingering, then your only resort is stronger fingers. One thing you might
try is to put self-adhesive moleskin pads on the keys, which make the
finger tips less damaged by high impact. Or, you might get away with

Dear hornlisters,
I am going out on a limb now, hold on.
Where was the U.N. when 1,000,000 people where massacred in Rwanda. They were on

couple the U.N. in on the action in Iraq? I'm sure you know the

William,
It IS possible to hand wind springs ( using the old hand techniques) that are
better than machine made ones.
However, it may probably be too difficult for the average tinkerer.
