Just transferred from 'record' to cd a recording of Howard Hanson's Symphony #2
Op. 30 - Romantic, done by the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra, conducted by Howard
Hanson. Interesting I find that we hear so little about that piece of music
when it's so filled with horn and such a 'stirring' 3
There is actually a CD recording under the Mercury label of that same piece.
Could have saved the trouble of transferring it and with much better quality
as well. Yes, few people outside of the USA know the piece - and it really
is a gem. Also good (and included on the same CD reissue) is the Song

Actually, I've given this a lot of thought now that
I'm pushing 60. I credit Hanson No. 2 with getting
me to take up the horn.
As a high school student, and tuba player, I was
heavily into electronics. I was always trying to
log radio stations that were further and further
away from my home in
Off hand, I can't think of anyone I know who likes a horn with a lot of
resistance. The object of a horn player's life is to find a horn that
is easy to play and is very responsive to his/her every desire to sound
wonderful and outshine Hermann Baumann.

On Sunday,
Hi, All. Hanson No. 2 is a great horn piece. It is really fun to
play. It stems from the early 30's, as I recall, when there were many
composers in the USA who were trying to write The Great American
symphony. Among those, beside Hanson, were Randall Thompson, and Roy
Harris and numerous
Being outside US (Japan), I knew and have been loving this particular
symphony for decades. I don't think it is merely an epigone of some
Austro-German romanticism. Rather, it does sound distinctively American
(maybe with a hint of Scandinavian flavor). Each time I listen to it,
I feel as if
I don't even thing in terms of resistance. I have had horns crooks that
are full of dent, then they become STUFFY

Besides the 'Romantic' Symphony 2 by Howard Hanson, I had (for free) another
record transferred to cd that was the Konzertstuck played by the Sarre Chamber
Orchestra and the four horn players were, Georges Barboteu, Michel Berges,
Daniel Dubar, and Gilbert Cousier. Does anyone know anything
Franklin Butler scored the Interlochen Theme from the Hanson Romantic
for horn ensemble, which was played by one of the large groups on the
final concert of the IHS meet in Rochester in 1997. He offered copies
of his arrangement free to anyone who wrote him. When I finally got
around to
Two years ago I was privileged to hear Samuel Jones's Requiem Variations
on the Interlochen Theme. Jones studied composition with Hanson and the
two later became close friends. The Variations are, of course, in memoriam
Howard Hanson and are constructed so that the most complex variation
This work has some great horn parts! For those of us on a budget, I picked up
a double disc recording of the 2nd symphony and 7th along with a smaller work
or two if I'm not mistaken on Delos with Seattle. It's nice to hear modern
romanticism without being derivative or cheesy, at least IMHO.
Though it does have great horn parts, I'm not a big fan of Hanson's
symphony. However, have to admit it was used to very good effect at the end
of the movie, Alien (the first one, from the late 70's).

I wish to congratulate you on the founding of Clamsaa, a noble concept.
Perhaps you would consider moving the holiday to some less congested part of
the year. My first thought would be Sept. 1st of each year. That is the
date of the ultimate clam by one
