Cousins, anyone interested in jazz or photography will want to read an article
in Sunday's New York Times about the musical collaboration between (jazz great)
Thelonius Monk and (Juilliard composition instructor) Hall Overton that took

Coincidentally, I have just finished listening to all the "Original
Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet" recordings with Mason Jones. What a player.
So delicate, with perfect ensemble playing. And I hear he was pretty good
orchesterally too.

Hi Milton,
I think the Selected Duets for French horn Compiled by H. Voxman publish
by Rubank is what you want. My beginning student right now has this as her
etude book. She works on each part then we try the duet. She is coming
along fast with this.

The process of recording and editing are actually quite similar to the days

My daughter's in 6th grade and we play through stuff in the yellow Voxman
Selected Duets for Horn, Volume I book. There's easy stuff in there as well
as some stuff for later.

The loss of a regional difference in "sound" isn't limited to musical
sound. Consider regional accents, idioms, and dialects in spoken language.
The fact is that if you record something for everyone to listen to, and
everyone listens to it, then we all start to sound the same over time.

I wonder if part of this is due to having a lot of national auditions where
they already know what sound they want and it typically isn't a sound that is
unique or even regional. I know a local orchestra along the gulf coast (who

I never heard this story about Mason, directly or personally but if it came
from Fred Hinger, there must be truth in it. In the old days of recording
the orchestra would play until someone clammed, not necessarily a horn player.

Hi Milton -
I wrote/arranged a couple Christmas duets (Frosty and Rudolph) this past
season with this kind of structure. The first part is relatively easy with
common statements of the melodic themes and some easy-to-understand
harmonies while the second part has similar statements of the melody

The conductor could use the original score plus his ears. The regular
score would be available from Universal Edition, Vienna, perhaps, but I
am not sure if the have it on sale. Normally they have these things on
rental only. Strauss is not public domain. It will take another ten
