Actually, in my experience, the Horn has much greater inconsistencies in
intonation from register to register. It¹s just that we¹re used to making
THOSE adjustments and not the ones necessary to play mello in tune. That,
coupled with old, poorly maintained instruments, incorrect mouthpiece
choices
by yours truly well, not
beyond ALL recognition!).

Oh yes, Clifford is one of my favorites! He was the first trumpet player I
heard who combined that level of technique with a big, fat, beautiful sound.
That's partially why I chose a ballad dedicated to him as my feature with
Max's brass quintet. I love Miles and Dizzy, also but for very
the beauty of the horn.

With all due respect, for some of us the answer is - all of the above. To

All these are important. Speed, agility, accuracy, cantabile, line, sound,
ensemble playing, improvising and more. This is not and either/or
