Sounds intriguing, would you care to give a couple of examples where the
tag values shown in JOSM are not the ones in the OSM database?
Thanks John

There are a lot of cool ideas that have risen and re-risen in this
thread. Custom iD presets for HOT tasks, tighter coordination between
training guides and software release cycles, better management of tags
across OSM.

I agree, you don’t want to maintain an iD fork..
But it’s probably helpful to think of the “presets" as a plugin. HOT TM can
embed the same iD software that OSM and everyone else uses, but with a smaller
subset of presets that apply more to the work that HOT does.

The problem is consistancy, http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features
and the internal tags differ from what one has to enter in iD. Not
everyone has their own personal trainer at a mapperthon, not everyone uses
English. It's not just a matter of updating in one place but many many
places.
Thanks Dale & Mikel,
JOSM and iD are just tools, each with their strengths and weaknesses.
I have made thousands of edits with both and demonstrate both when I lead
mapathons, most people choose to edit tasks with JOSM, but many like iD,
the important thing is to coach them to create good data.
I'm totally against HOT maintaining a fork of ID. It sounds simple enough
in the beginning but will be more difficult as time goes on.
Updating training materials is a pretty simple thing to do as we should try
and refresh them regularly anyway.

Which is not at all relevant as iD is not a HOT project.
OSM empowers its developers to make decisions: on openstreetmap-carto, iD,

All the tags in iD have changed.
There is no longer Road or Unclassified Road. I have no idea what a “minor
road” is, and it doesn’t match anything in OSM or HOT tags. Other tags have
disappeared as well including Water, etc.
These strange new tags need to be changed back to the ones that were

Hi John,
I am not really sure what you are asking, but in looking at highway
tagging in iD, it appears that iD does not use the same icon label for
roads based on the tag values. I had no idea.
I assumed there was an "unclassified" road icon in iD as the tag is
highway=unclassified, however
The highway tags seen in JOSM are not apparently what an iD user sees. I'm
trying very hard to put this politely but how ... am I supposed to
communicate with an iD user to say please think twice before using
highway=motorway in an African village and how are they supposed to know
what the Af
