Once again - many thanks. Progressing slowly - this Damascus task is a
real challenge !

Hi Andrew,
The custom imagery was only available for this most recent project so I
was using Bing when I made the short video on mapping tall buildings.
So yes, you need to use the WMS imagery and align it to the existing
mapping or the bing imagery and then map using the new imagery.
But

Your video was really useful in explaining how to map this really dense
area, and has encouraged me to make a contribution, but before I do, can I
resolve a slight contradiction. In the text of your message you mention
that imagery that needed to be used was the WMS layer. When I first loo
Hi all,
The previous two projects in this area have been completed and the third
one is now posted:
Damascus Area - Qudsiya #1694 - http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/1694
This project uses imagery from February of this year, but it is only
available as a WMS layer so JOSM is required to map th
In Belgium (and probably most other European countries), cities are a
hodgepodge of buildings and extensions built over time. It would change the
meaning of building=terrace to use this in cases like this. (even the
government can't keep track of this, often buildings are simply split along

Hi all,
I think it is difficult to get a more specific tag than building=yes for
most buildings from aerial imagery.
building=yes is generally correct because it is the most generic of
building tags that can be refined when more information is available.
It is not misusage to apply buildin
I somehow missed looking at the main building wiki page, focusing on the
subarticles. As Blake rightly pointed out at the tagging list:
"In addition outlines can either be simplified shapes or very detailed
outlines which conform accurately to the shape of the building. It is not
uncommon for buil
building=multiple certainly describes it better. Terraces, in my mind, are
generally linear in form, whereas some of these collections of buildings
extend in all sorts of directions. Advice from the tagging list would be
really useful, I think

Thanks Joost, that's really good to know. I'll continue as you suggest...

Hi Jaako,
It's an interesting point. Being from the uk, I associate terraces with
something very different from what is being mapped in Damascus But,
building=yes is misleading in this case and terrace is a much more logical
description.
Be interested to hear what others think

This is a recurring issue/challenge
Hi all,
The first project in this series (I think there will be 3) is almost
completed, it just needs some validation.
But we felt it would be good to get the next in the series out there to
get it mapped as soon as possible.
So it is created and published here:
Damascus Area - Maarba #167
Hi all, a bit of advice, if you have time
In the task Blake posted, some of the buildings are too difficult
distinguish individually. However, I can see that there is a whole block of
buildins. Is it ok to trace and tag the whole block as building=yes?
For example, in the south-westerly corne
Hi all,
I just posted a new project to map a small, but very dense urban area
(we have a few more in the same region coming up).
This kind of mapping is a real challenge in the city center areas and it
is slightly complicated due to the very tall nature of most of the
buildings. It gets easi
