Ok. I gave up. I wiped / and /usr and reinstalled. I went digging in
the RPM database, and there was stuff in there from 2003, so my guess is
that along the way something didn't upgrade quite right.
I installed straight mandriva 2006 and the printer is working great again,
printing and scan

I tested your document on a CLJ2500 and the pdf prints out in no time at

"readline" (the module that isn't being found) is in the Python _standard_ library on Unix/Linux. This points to an incorrect Python installation. I would check with the Debian support resources on what may have caused this issue.

in HPLIP that I can't even read documents that have non-black
text...same printer, same computer, same toner, different drivers
