Used to use Linux Mint. They're official advice to people wanting to
migrate from one version to a newer one is: re-install, do not use
dist-upgrade.

sudo apt-get update
& upgrade
& dist-upgrade
which is the same you normally do via the gui, excepions exluded
(partial updates, troubles while
they recommend not doing it.
