Good move, but maybe you only solved the dataset part of the problem.
I think, you still have the VTS part of the problem: if the volume is
still mounted on the unit, both the volume and unit are still not usable
for MVS. You can call IBM to dial in into the VTS and dismount the
volume. Unt

With an I/O error, there is the possibility that the hardware thinks that
it still has the tape on the drive even though MVS doesn't. You need to
look at the hardware interface. In both IBM and HDS equipment we have been
able to login to a site that let us look at and control the hardware, i.e.

I think you have a problem. After the I/O error the tape should have
been unmounted, but apparently has not.
Now the library and MVS have a different view on the volume and unit.
You can't use MVS to unmount the volume and I can't think of another
way.
