Lori,
If possible start riding Icelandics BEFORE you buy one so you can
experience the gaits and decide if you absolutely have to have the
tolt. My mare usually chooses the tolt first and she can mix
everything in with it or give a lovely perfect gait; some days I can't
get a trot or a canter on t
I am so sorry for Vickie. I agree with everybody about taking control
of the space; BUT I want to warn against kissing the face of all male
horses, except the very old and the ones who have demonstrated no
aggression for many years. Mares may be candidates, but the bad
stories I know about have a
The current issue of TOLT NEWS has several good articles, my favorite

Sonoma, California, has a Gypsy Vanner importer/breeder. Stephanie
Burlington imported a lovely mare some years ago that she planned to

But the mare turned out to be pregnant and several DNA tests later the

The message I was working on just disappeared, so here I go again.

Robyn,
The picture of your mother astride the vintage mare really struck a
cord for me. That photo, now framed, hangs on my wall and the walls
of several friends over 65 who also hope to be able to mount a horse
for another decade -- we could never hope to look so good in the
saddle as she at 93.

The author is a very accomplished rider and teacher and I was
disappointed that she did not write more about her riding and more
about Tom's teachings. Mostly she writes about her emotional
struggle with family members, her mother in particular, and it was not
an uninteresting read.
Here in Sonoma in northern California we got a good 8" of rain but a nice break
in the storm to allow for run-off so the creeks didn't jump their banks. Our
winds at about 40 mph were calm compared to some other areas. A light dusting
of snow on the highest peaks. The more densely populated
Years ago, while hanging out in the cafeteria at U.C. Davis Vet
Hospital, I met a professor from the animal nutrition department. I
described the wonderful diet I had put my aging cat on and mentioned
the addition of flax oil. She said something like "well, flax oil is

If I leave the arena I use a crupper (round, witherless mare) and on
trail rides I add the breast plate. Attach the crupper and be sure it
is sitting nicely against the base of the tail, then slide your hand
under it midway and turn your hand up and edge that's how much, or how

My mare has been without shoes for 2 years, but has been ouchy most of that
time.
A barefoot trimmer (another of Pete's followers) has trimmed her 3 times and

to ride her without the Easy Boots for short periods in place where she
would normally
get ouchy. Her size 00's are too big for her no
