From the log file “/var/log/cron” , I can see the “/etc/cron.hourly”,
“/etc/cron.daily” , etc getting executed properly only the entry done

If the BIOS works fine, then were you not able to boot a live-usb
session at all?
BIOS works fine. It even detects the HDD. But I was unable to boot even
from a live-usb. After I removed the HDD from the laptop, I am able to
boot from live-usb, confirming that the issue was with HDD.

But sadly, it simply will not boot from any device, be it pendrive, or
bootable cd. Well. I opened the laptop, and removed HDD and now I can
boot from pendrive.
Do you mean to say that your laptop was not booting from any device
I have an MCP51 chipset and I don't have any issues in Fedora 11.
Are you sure Alsa is installed properly on your machine? Run alsa-info to
get diagnostic info.
If there is a problem with Alsa, you can try upgrading or re-installing Alsa
drivers and utilities.

The fun is, I can get the sound in headphones. Still no sound in the front
speakers of the laptop.
Does anyone here have any new ideas to tackle?
Some cards have separate volume controls for headphone out and speaker out
and some have a switch for enabling speaker out. You can either look for

You can try bcm43xx-fwcutter (If you
have a bcm43xx WiFi chip) or ndiswrapper. fwcutter should be
convenient because the kernel module for ndiswrapper needs to be built
every time you upgrade to a new kernel. Google for Broadcom Wifi under

Can you try mounting a CD
manually? Can you try this and tell us what happens?
mkdir ~/test
sudo mount /dev/cdrom ~/test
You can use gparted (or mkdosfs/mkntfs if you're a command line guy) in
Ubuntu to format your drives.

However, if that doesn't work for some reason or you ever have a

Did you check your volume and switches in the mixer? Many soundcards

For that you can either use the mixer from the volume control icon in

Can you provide more info? Like the distribution you are using, kernel

That depends on how your broadband modem is configured. I think BSNL
nowadays configures most modems to handle the PPPoE part so that the end
user just has to plug in the network cable.
If the modem is not configured for automatic connection, you can either
configure it to do that or use pppoeconf

Junise,
Did you try the options in Syam's first mail? Boot into a LiveCD (in IDE
SCSI mode) and re-install GRUB to /dev/sda?
If that doesn't work, a re-install of Windows with SATA drivers might be the
only solution.
Also, can you post the exact error message you receive when you try to boot
