Why are you trying to run e2* commands on a non-ext filesystem? Of course, e2label will complain! If you are sure about /dev/hda6 being your swap, then do the following: 1. Backup fstab 2. replace the UUID column of your swap line with /dev/hda6. Then try swapon. Thanks Sandip. I tried

I figured out something more. The problem has to do with hibernation. Swap partition cracks up because I have been hibernating the machine. It seems the problem is same as an old bughttps://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/42299. If I add resume=/dev/hda6 to the kernel

Thank you so much. This solves the problem. But just for the record, the directory you mentioned should have been '/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d'. There is no directory called mkinitramfs (at least on my system). And I did what you have suggested in '/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d', and it worked.
