Why are you trying to run e2* commands on a non-ext filesystem? Of
course, e2label will complain!
If you are sure about /dev/hda6 being your swap, then do the following:
1. Backup fstab
2. replace the UUID column of your swap line with /dev/hda6.
Then try swapon.

I figured out something more. The problem has to do with hibernation. Swap
partition cracks up because I have been hibernating the machine. It seems
the problem is same as an old

there when you had Dapper installed and it didn't go away because you
did a dist-upgrade and didn't use the edgy graphical installer.

Thank you so much. This solves the problem.
But just for the record, the directory you mentioned should have been
'/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d'. There is no directory called mkinitramfs (at
least on my system). And I did what you have suggested in
'/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d', and it worked.
It remains a mystery why I did not face the problem in Dapper Drake if, as
you say, it was there even then.
Also, shouldn't something be done to ensure that the problem if taken care
of when people upgrade from dapper drake to edgy.
