The update manager says Cannot download prerequisites while being in the

OK, well after a little more fiddling, I've got it working again.
Here is what I did:
1) First I created a new user account but this time through the gnome menus
(Administration-Users Groups), and made sure that 'Use audio devices' was
checked on the 'User privileges' tab in the settings.
