Thanks for the replies. Turns out the client will be happy with a DVD
drive in the computer, but I may try the rejuvenation tips on the two
CD-RW drives I have.

I'm working on a 600MHz iMac G3 whose CD-RW drive has a hard time
intaking and ejecting discs; it ejects the disc partway, then strains
for a while as if the 5V (?) it's getting from the computer just isn't
enough to push it all the way out, then pulls it in and mounts it
again. Does anyone know,
MIne does that too - I usually just give it a little help by running a piece of
paper or another disc past the left hand corner of the drive slot, triggering
the release lever in there. This pops enough of the disc out to grab it. I
guess it is the release mechanism that is failing, probably
