iMac problems

I have an iMac that, up to a few weeks ago, worked perfectly. I got this iMac from my cousin, I just had to get a keyboard and mouse. I also bought an Imation super disk drive and it worked well. I put a new battery in. How do i go about getting it up and running again. All ideas will be welcome.
