Hi Folks,
I'm just wondering something about what I wrote in my last post.
I have found that a large number of the responses on this topic have advised
Dwight to do everything but use the program's OCR capabilities.
In fact, short of myself, no one has suggested it.
I'm just wondering why
Another way to retrieve the text is to use OpenBook or K1000, print
to the virtual printer, and read from there.

Hi,
Victor,
I just checked Adobe Acrobat version 8 and could not find the option
you mentioned. It must be something in the professional version?

Hi Curtis,
That's what I was thinking also, as I don't have the Adobe Reader installed
on my system, I only have the pro version, which is why I'm probably the
only person suggesting this option.
Can one save the PDF under another format, such as TIFF, under Adobe Reader?
If so, Microsoft
As far as I know, Adobe's Acrobat Reader does not have any OCR capability by
itself. I believe, however, that you might have some OCR program installed
like Omnipage. It will provide such options in menus of applications like
Acrobat Reader or Word to perform an OCR and automatically convert
The only save option I get is to save it as a PDF file or to save it as
text.
When I use the save as text option for a empty document which isn't
really empty. The text file it creates is empty . Not a very helpful
option.

The creator of the document probably scanned it himself and simply
converted it to a PDF. no screen reader will be able to handle that
kind of document well. If you have either Open Book or K1000 you can
use their virtual printer utility to perform OCR on the document.
Results will vary, but if

Since I haven't seen any response to your question, I'm going to take a
stab at it.
I'm using Office 2007 with Windows XP and it works very well, so I don't
think waiting for JAWS 10 is the answer. Plus that's a ways off yet.
I had a similar problem awhile back. For some reason the Normal

Hi Dwight,
Once you open the document, go
No, that's not available in the free version. They need then to have at
least an OCR program like Abbyy FineReader or Omnipage, recent versions of
which can convert pdf images into a reading format.

Hi Flor,
If one owns a scanner, then it stands to reason that the scanner's software
contained a TWAIN compatible driver that Microsoft Word can then use to OCR
the page in Microsoft Document Imaging, which you can find in the Tools menu
of the Microsoft Office sub-menu in the start menu.
I wonder if the OCR software is included in the accesswible version of the
reader? I've had good luck with the Adobe 9 accessible Reader. It always says
something like configuring the document or something. I'll find it.
If you'd like the link I can get it for you. Maybe I'll post it anyway.

yes. But first, you must install that part of Microsoft office. (I don't
know how it is now, but it was an extra, therefore not part of the standard
installation, in the Microsoft office XP Small business Edition.

Hi Victor,
You put it well. In my case, I have Kurzweil 1000 already, so I guess my
needs for scanning print documents are taken care of there. (there's a nice
new add-in to the latest version of K1000 that lets you scan from Microsoft
word itself, with which feature I'm not too familiar.
Hi Max,
Exactly what part of it doesn't work anymore?
I have all updates installed on my version of Office 2003, and have found no
