The problem with the page number location dialog is that once you make your
selection, you're taken right out of the dialog. Thus:
Alt-n for insert
N, u to go to the page number location area
Select either top or bottom and press enter
Select 1, 2 or 3 for left, middle or right, p

This can be done on the Page Number Format dialog box; there's not set by
default in any built-in style. There you can specify wetter to continue
from the current section or where to start numbering. It is not so clear in
the dialog (I'd have to see the help), but I supose the Start From
