As has already been stated, once you highlight the word you want to spell
check, you would place the cursor at the beginning of the word, holding down
the shift key, right arrow until you've highlighted the entire word. Once
it's highlighted, press the F7 key, and the spell checker will check

Looking at my desktop you are absolutely correct that is the app key just to

Try tapping the up arrow key in quick succession while holding down the insert
key when your curser is on the word in question and tapping control to stop it.
