Hello Steve,
I want to get away from MSE because it doesn't seem to pick up
anything, even if I don't do
try to configure it to play nice
with certain sites or programs. That's why I prefer Windows Defender.

You do have a valid point today, but if it is something known, the
antivirus should be able to pick it up. The fact a file sat on my
machine so I could see how MSE performed with it and it never picked it
up and I knew it was infected gave me the hint that it wasn't seemingly

That's at least 10 years or so ago.
But their free one should be alright as I believe its cloud driven.
