I was moving around on the ribbon and somehow before I changed the start I
got into tell me what you want to do
now it won't let me go into the file menu!

startup options, and then on down to where it says "Show the start screen
when this program opens", uncheck thi

button and press enter. Now the backstage view will not open when you open

In Word 2013 I press control+o to open a document. What comes up for me is
what Jaws announces is "backstage view". When I start tabbing around it I
find options to open unsaved files, recent documents (which end up being a
mighty long list as I try to tab through it) and some other stuff.
