I added a testcase of sending a null password to the LdapLoginModule
and it correctly fails to authenticate the user. Have you tried a simple

function through JMX, so whatever it is that updates the database, could
use that.

How about setting the idle timeout? Or are you talking about a db error
that breaks the connection? These are hard to deal with since
SQLExceptions could be a constraint violation or a dead connection, and
there's no way to distinguish them.

aren't actually using hypersonic to store important data in. There are
plenty of free databases that aren't toys, such as firebird, postgres, and
