Whatever the cause, this problem has vanished once the user session
was closed and restarted ... must have been some environment variable
or persistent state of something volatile.

Computers are useless. They can only give you answers.(Pablo Picasso)
to set the global
P classpath.
When you compile, do you use Ant? I ran into a similar problem until
I realized that while my Ant build.xml had the needed jar file in the
path to compile the sources, JDE did not. Keeping the two in sync
occassionally rises up to bite me ;)

Never mind --- turns out I had an old jar on the path.
The litmus test:
print(PathUtil.class.getDeclaredMethods());

Computers are useless
a lot of
swapping or taxing some other resource.
NFS-mounted elisp files will do it too. Also check that your elisp
files have been byte-compiled.

packages one at a time by following the requires

There are many things which do not concern the process --- Joan of Arc
because, for
better or worse, the improved GUI support has helped our
non-programmers to migrate to Emacs for email and documentation.
IMHO, the best has not yet been invented, although my money is on
the upcoming major release of GNUEmacs :)
B God bless RMS!
I'll second that.

,
but when I try to use C-` for the second error, I get a prompt find
this error in which source file? and the default is the build.xml
file. The workaround for this is to code so carefully as to only get
one syntax error ;)

What
(or switch to the *compilation*).
