I found an easier workaround: use the "switch user" button. Normally it doesn't
let you shutdown or do other actions like that, but for some reason it acts

Update: switching user fixes this. The login page glitches out for a few
seconds then switches to the plasma 6 wallpaper and after logging back in, the
breeze theme is applied and theme selection works

Found another symptom. Opening the nvidia-settings app disables night light.
Moving the sliders in the night light settings fixes it.

I just noticed - when the screen gets disabled on Wayland, it affects X11 too
on the next login. Looks like the screen just gets disabled whenever I log in
to the Wayland session.
