Interestingly, using the VirtualBox GUI to boot a VM created from the
20200522.0.0 vagrant box causes the entire VirtualBox GUI to hang. The

yes, your probably right it is not exactly the same. I overlooked in
your initial post that the problem happened before grub and the title
sounds so much like my problem. I think I assumed from here

After debugging a bit. I narrowed down the problem.
It is related to the FireWire800 auido adapter (Tascam FireOne) the
device goes in to a non working state. It seems that the the control
part of the communication works. But The SoundCard is in a dead lock.

I don't think your issue is the same I got. Note that my problem happened with
or without the dock, and I wasn't even reaching grub. That's the big difference
here. If you lose the video after grub, than your problem is elsewhere, and my
suggestion is to boot without "quiet splash" on

The freeze causes the mouse cursor to stop moving and keyboard to stop
responding and nothing moves on screen, not even the clock. Curiously
the music continues to play (and e.g. sound from youtube video continues

I've switched back to the 5.4 kernel and have enabled the 'nomodeset'
parameter. The laptop has booted fine. I'll keep using it like this

Here is alsa-info.sh output with snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0

With dmic_detect=0 internal speakers works but internal mic does not.
External headset works fine both headphones and mic.
