the one VirtualBox VM (Windows 10) that I run has started throwing various
BSODs.
I tried a fresh Windows 10 install in a new VM (several times) under
linux-image-5.14.0-1045-oem.
While experimenting with FreeDOS and Windows PE, I discovered that
disabling UEFI mode (switching to Legacy mode) means I can now boot into
kernel 5.15. Certainly not a solution, but at least a workaround.

monitor connected via HDMI wasn't detected. According to xrandr the
HDMI-1 output is "disconnected".
