Maxine, I think an option - especially if you like knitting with circular needles - is, buying the Addi Click set. It includes a connector that enables you to lengthen the cords. I have the KnitPicks (or KnitPro set, as it is known in Europe) set which also contains a connector. I think... Not sure

Maxine, there is no need to buy a longer circular needle. You can use several shorter ones - 2 or 3 it's up to you. When you start knitting with one needle, make sure that you are using the other end of the same needle. There is no need to have another separate needle as when you are using double

Are you sure you need a longer needle? I am not sure what 3-ply wool is (the ply system for sizing yarn isn't used much outside Australia/NZ, AfAIK), but unless it's an exceedingly thick yarn (unlikely if you're using 3.25mm), most shawls should fit on a 1 meter needle when the stitches are bunched
